bintsuke

A sticky substance – a cross between oil and wax – that is used in many ways, including under white makeup to hold it on the face; in dressing wigs; to stick on habutai, etc.  It comes in different hardnesses for different purposes.

 

bôshi

A white silk skullcap that can be worn under the habutai, which goes directly under the wig.

 

bunko / bunko musubi

A method of tying the obi that resembles a large bow.

 

buyô (buyou, buyoh)

In kimono dressing, a belt, wider than a himo, used to control the arrangement and neatness of the area from the eri or collar, to the hashori or fold.  One or more may be worn.

A collar on any type of garment.  The collar of a kimono.

 

eri shin

A stiffening strip used in the collar of a kimono undergarment.  It can be made of very stiff net, or even plastic.

A wooden platform type of sandal, now worn mainly in the summertime. 

 

habutai

 ????

 

A tight cap intended to be worn under a wig, the habutai is wrapped around the head and gathered on the sides with strings.  A habutai to go under female wigs, is purple, and a male habutai often shows a blue color, representing the shaven portion of the head.

 

hadajuban

A soft cotton undergarment worn as the first layer under kimono to absorb perspiration.

 

hanhaba obi

A half-width obi, worn with yukata or in very casual situations.

 

himo

 ??

 

A long fabric “belt” used for tying kimono in place, himo are long enough to go around the body twice, tying on the side, and are sewn of cotton, wool, or other fabric.
